The Best Business Resource in 2020
Last week’s email was sent out to you at 11pm UK time because I got trigger happy and hit post instead of scheduling it for the next day. I was writing it late because I was running behind. I hold my hands up… I’ve been pretty terrible at getting this newsletter out on time recently. And so from this moment forward, I’m going to plan this little baby ahead of time, to have an email with you every Sunday.
Thank you for bearing with me!
One thought: Learning from online mentors 🙌
You may have heard about the benefits of being mentored, which is essentially learning closely from somebody who has achieved something that you want to achieve.
I believe mentorship holds one of the great opportunities in the world.
Almost every successful person, across different domains and expertise, mentions that they had a mentor in their lives who made a dramatic impact. And of course, we can have more than one, we can have 10 mentors or 100!
Mentorship doesn’t need to be done with the other person’s permission. You don’t need to have met somebody, or for them to even know that you exist. A mentor can be somebody who you are learning from online, or even from the history books. Arguably a mentor doesn’t even need to be a person, but I digress. I don’t mean a piece of fruit, but you could learn a lot from a fictional character for example…
I take inspiration from so many people, but in particular, there are mentors who I accredit to having changed my life. Noah Kagan is one of them.
Noah Kagan’s Office Hours
When I used to work at Cambridge University, I used to listen to Noah Kagan’s podcast ‘Noah Kagan Presents’ on every commute. Noah is hilarious and his advice is super actionable. Even if your interests do not lie with business or entrepreneurship, the episodes usually address the fear we feel around starting new things.
Noah’s incredibly successful and is in a stage of his life now where he finds energy in giving back. This leads me on to, what I believe right now, is one of the great business resources in 2020:
Every Friday from 12-1pm (CT) Noah hosts a YouTube Live ‘Office Hours’ session where he sits down to answer your questions.
You can ask him questions directly and get a response. It. Is. Insane. Noah could literally charge £10,000+ for coaching sessions, he’s been there and done it, yet we can chat to him about what we’re trying to do right now. For. Free. Even if you don’t have a question, his community of ‘underdogs’ - people who are looking to start something - ask really good questions because everyone is in the same boat.
He loves his community and will even respond to your emails, meaning I now have somebody who I would listen to every single day commuting knowing who I am and cheering me on. It’s pretty insane, but this is credit to Noah more than anything. He’s using his platform to help other people by sharing his own experiences.
There are people out there who want to help you. This will change your life if you realise the opportunity and do something about it.
What’s a resource that you feel is underrated right now? What’s a secret you could share to the benefit of others? Reply to this email to let me know and I’ll feature it in next week’s newsletter!
Talk soon,
Joe
Content tip of the week 🚀
Keep things fresh! Audience Fatigue is something I’ve been thinking about a lot recently. I strongly encourage that you post the content you find the easiest, but you should consider the order that you post content. For example, post a text post, post an image, post a video. Don’t post text, text, text, video, video, video, image, image, image.
Super simple, but when you post more often, posting something different each day will help to capture your audience’s attention. If I’ve posted 3 videos in a row, you’d be less likely to watch the third one. This all ties into planning ahead and stopping to think about your end-user.
Book of the week ✍️
The Alchemist - Paulo Coehlo
This book meant a lot to me when I first read it. The Alchemist is a fable about following your dream and Paulo Coehlo is an incredible storyteller. I highly recommend this book for anybody feeling lost.
