10 people you must follow online
Happy Sunday! How’s your week been? I’ve got some updates my end which I will share with you in next week’s email (Oo what could they be?!)
If you want to learn every time you log in to a social media app, then you’ll enjoy this week’s email! I’ll explain why you should welcome the following entrepreneurs, business owners and thought-leaders into your feeds. I recommend that you follow them online - please don’t stalk them in real life and say I told you to do it…
One thought: Must-follow thought-leaders 🧠
“Your newsfeed is your library” - Steven Bartlett, CEO of Social Chain
We’re blessed to be living in the Information Age, where we can learn from some of the greatest minds every single day. We can watch their interactions, hear their latest ideas in real-time and reach out to them to create opportunities for ourselves.
I really enjoy content from these individuals and if you’re interested in entrepreneurship, innovation and business I think you will too. Our social media feeds can work for us, or against us. We can waste our time by following the wrong people, but if we choose wisely, we can learn something new and feel inspired every time we scroll.
Sahil Lavingia - Founder of Gumroad
At 19, Sahil was the second employee at Pinterest. His story is seriously inspiring and I’d recommend that you read the Medium article: Reflecting on My Failure to Build a Billion-Dollar Company. Sahil’s tweets are amazing and he’s starting to post more on LinkedIn. Every month, he has an ‘Open Board Meeting’ where he shares publicly how Gumroad is growing. He also has a public Notion ‘Wiki’ where you can learn about Gumroad’s mission, values and see its roadmap. This level of transparency is ahead of our time.
Seth Godin - Author of ‘This Is Marketing’
Seth Godin writes daily articles on his blog which you can find from Googling ‘Seth’ - which I think is pretty awesome. I wish Googling ‘Joe’ would come up with a picture of me! Seth’s written 19 books about marketing. His personality is infectious and I’d recommend finding any podcast episode with him as a guest. His interview with Tim Ferriss is a great introduction.
Noah Kagan - Founder of AppSumo
I’ve been listening to Noah’s podcast ‘Noah Kagan Presents’ for years now and I absolutely love him. Noah is hilarious and his content focuses on turning ‘wantrepreneurs’ - people who pretend to play business - into actual entrepreneurs. Noah was employee 30 at Facebook and is the Founder of 8-figure business AppSumo. If you’re struggling to start anything, watch Noah!
Tim Ferriss - Entrepreneur, Author, Investor
Tim Ferriss should need no introduction. His book ‘The 4-Hour Work Week’ changed my life and has inspired so many people to take ownership and design for themselves their dream lifestyle. I regularly re-read the 4HWW and I couldn’t recommend this book any more. His podcast ‘The Tim Ferriss Show’ is 400+ episodes deep where he interviews some of the world’s most interesting people. It’s my favourite podcast because you get introduced to so many inspirational people who you can then learn about.
Naval Ravikhant - Entrepreneur and Investor
Naval is an American entrepreneur and investor. He is the co-founder, chairman and former CEO of AngelList. I first came across Naval from his provocative tweets, now coined ‘Navalisms’, which you should definitely read. It’s fascinating to hear his views on what is going on in the world. He’s one of the main reasons why I log in to Twitter despite never tweeting myself.
Tiago Forte - Productivity Guru
Tiago’s ‘Second Brain’ methodology changed the productivity game for me. He’s a huge inspiration as to why I use Notion to stay on top of my life and how I have made streamlined processes for creating content. I highly recommend the articles P.A.R.A and Building a Second Brain.
David Perell - Online Writing Guru
David is a really interesting guy. He believes that writing is a superpower and that we should all improve how we communicate our ideas. I’ve heard great things about his online course ‘Write of Passage’ and I would suggest great resources like his interview with Sahil Lavingia: How to Grow Your Business by Writing and his popular article The Ultimate Guide to Writing Online.
Derek Sivers - Entrepreneur and Author
Derek is a great human. He replies to every single email he gets which is pretty mind-blowing. When asked how he manages this, he replied: “Macros. My 25 most-common sentences are mapped to 25 keys on the keyboard. Most emails are answered in 5-10 seconds.” Derek is a story-teller with the phrase “Don’t be a donkey” a favourite of mine. Buridan’s Ass is a paradox of a donkey being unsure on what to do first: should it drink water or eat hay? The donkey soon dies from both hunger and thirst. This teaches us to not be indecisive, as it just requires planning to do everything we want to.
James Clear - Author and Habit Formation Expert
James Clear is the author of Atomic Habits, probably the most recommended productivity book I’ve come across. James writes about building habits and has a newsletter following of over 800,000 people. His content really hit home for me that we must take ownership of our environment, and the important role it plays with forming habits. We all want to create better habits, whether that’s eating better, exercising more or starting a new hobby. Learning how to effectively sustain habits is a life-changing skill, which makes James a must-follow.
Content tip of the week 🚀
Create your own style! Branding is really important because, in a busy newsfeed, your audience will rapidly scroll past content until they come across a post that gets their attention. If your content is branded in a recognisable way, even if somebody scrolls past your post, they’ll see in that split second that it was your content. Establish a consistent style of posting to benefit from this.
